The use of modern technology to assist in decision making by soccer officials has long been the subject of debate. The steadfast position adopted by a certain Mr Blatter, against the collective wishes of a succession of his senior FIFA staff, has been a source of frustration to two generations of fans. Geoff Hurst at Wembley or Maradonna’s infamous “Hand of God” goal are great for football romantics, but the truth is that the majority of football fans have wanted these situation prevented for a long time.
